My Story – The Journey Behind CRS Safety

I grew up in construction. As a teenager, I found myself working in the trades, and by the age of 18, I was in the oil and gas field. That’s where my real education began. I started out as a hydro blaster, working in towers and confined spaces—high-risk environments that demanded grit and resilience.

Over the years, I saw firsthand the harsh reality of unsafe conditions. Friends and coworkers I knew were injured or killed: crushed by equipment, falling from heights, or succumbing to hazards in confined spaces. Back then, the safety culture was unforgiving. If you made a mistake, you were gone. There was little focus on learning, improvement, or true protection—it was “safety by fear.” At that time, I didn’t care much for safety because the system itself didn’t seem to care.

But as I got older, I wanted more. I pursued and earned a degree in Environmental Health & Safety. I made a choice: I would dedicate my career to safety—not just enforcing rules, but making a difference. I wanted to protect the people in the field, and I also wanted to influence organizations at the highest level, helping leadership understand that safety is not a cost, but an investment in people and project success.

I worked for years as a safety professional, gaining valuable experience across industries. But I also faced another challenge: being undervalued and underpaid despite the critical nature of the work. That taught me a lesson I carried into the creation of my own company.

When I founded Controlled Risk Services (CRS Safety), I built it on a simple but powerful belief: take care of your safety professionals, and they will take care of your project. Unlike many firms, we pay our employees 70–80% of the contract rate. Why? Because when safety staff feel respected and well-compensated, they don’t need to leave for a better offer. They stay, they commit, and they bring stability.

This stability is critical. When a safety professional leaves mid-project, a new hire has to start from scratch—learning the site, the culture, the trade partners, and building trust in the field. That transition period creates risks, delays, and challenges. By keeping our professionals loyal and engaged, we eliminate those disruptions.

At CRS Safety, our foundation is simple: build trust, pay fairly, develop strong relationships, and hold everyone accountable. This is how we create a safety culture that doesn’t just enforce compliance—it drives project success.
